The main event of tonight’s Bellator 118 at the Revel Casino will be headlined by an interim bantamweight title fight, but only one of the fighters can walk away with the title with a victory.
Rafael Silva missed weight yesterday by nearly two pounds (136.9 lbs), while Joe Warren did make weight (134.6 lbs). Due to Silva not being able to make weight, only Warren can leave the cage tonight with the interim title with a victory.
Following the weigh-ins, Bellator MMA Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney revealed the contingency plans to TheMMAReport.com and issued a statement on late Thursday night about the main event.
“Rafael Silva is a warrior. He was offered this opportunity 3 weeks ago when Dantas was injured. He had a tremendous amount of weight to cut and got incredibly close, but to push for the last two pounds would simply have been medically unsafe,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “Another great warrior here, Joe Warren made weight, so the Belt remains in the line for Joe. We always have a contingency plan in place for instances like this, and we are moving ahead with this 5 round fight which should be fireworks.”
Warren is looking to become the first fighters in Bellator history to win a title in two different weight classes and Silva has won thirteen in a row. The winner of this fight is scheduled to face Eduardo Dantas in a unification bout and the target date for that fight is unknown due to the head injury that Dantas is currently dealing with.
