Freddy Assuncao explains decision to move up in weight to fight for Titan FC lightweight title

The main event of Titan FC 40 on August 12 will be a lightweight title fight as Freddy Assuncao returns to competition for the first time in over a year as he will challenge Gesias “JZ” Cavalacante for the 155 pound title.

Assuncao (9-1) is currently on an eight fight winning streak and this will be his first fight since defeating Cody Bollinger by submission at Titan FC 34 in a featherweight bout. So why did Assuncao decide to move up a weight class to take on the Titan FC lightweight champion?

“It was really just the opportunity. I have always thought that maybe later on in my career, I would go up so I don’t have to cut as much weight,” Assuncao said on The MMA Report Podcast. “This opportunity came. The 145 pound champ was not ready. Titan and myself felt, I was ready for a title fight to solidify my career before maybe getting in the UFC. They offered me the 155 and it made a lot of sense.”
