The MMA Report Podcast: Alex Hernandez, Chito Vera and Greg Rebello

Alex Hernandez

Mike Jackson/LFA

On this edition of The MMA Report Podcast, Jason and Daniel touch on all things MMA including some new details on Bellator/DAZN streaming deal, two recent Dana White Tuesday Night Contender Series winners testing positive for marijuana metabolites, plus you will hear interviews with Alex Hernandez, Chito Vera and Greg Rebello.

At the start of the show, Jason talks about being in Nashville last weekend and then tells you some details he has learned about the Bellator streaming deal with DAZN in relation to Bellator international events. If you are a fan of Bellator, you will want to hear what Jason was told this week about the upcoming Bellator event in Israel.

Up next, Jason tells you about recent Dana White Tuesday Night Contender Series winners Anthony Hernandez and Jordan Williams testing positive for marijuana metabolites during an in-competition drug test. Jason and Daniel discuss the threshold for what’s considered a failed test for marijuana with the Nevada Athletic Commission and how they both hope the Nevada commission hands down a light suspension.

Then they get into what happened at last week’s Bellator 204 and PFL 6. On the Bellator front, they discuss the dominating victory by Darrion Caldwell against Noad Lahat and the knockout victory by Ricky Bandejas over James Gallagher. On the PFL side of things, they talk about the victory by Kayla Harrison, what’s next for her, and the standings in the welterweight tournament.

Next is the interview portion of this week’s podcast as you will hear Jason’s recent conversations with Alex Hernandez, Chito Vera and Greg Rebello. Hernandez comes on the podcast to recap his recent victory against Olivier Aubin-Mercier, if he’s interested in a matchup against Islam Makhachev and why he’s more active on Instagram then Twitter. Then it’s on to the conversation with Vera, who recaps his recent victory at UFC 227 and explains who he’s interested in fighting next. And in the final interview, Rebello comes on to explain why he decided to end his retirement and when he would like his next fight to take place.

Following the interviews, Jason and Daniel preview Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 135 and explain what’s drawing them to the television set on Saturday night. Along with explaining why they will be watching, they go through the entire fight card and discuss various aspects of the fights. Then they wrap up this week’s podcast by discussing the ticket sales for UFC 229 and have their weekly Buy/Sell segment.

Will the new ACB World app have their kickboxing and BJJ alone with MMA?

Dana tells some guys he really cares about to retire, but not guys like Gray Maynard or Jake Ellenberger.

Top 15 Bellator old regime signings: Chandler, Alvarez, Askren, Lima, Koreshkov, Pitbull bros, Rampage, Tito, King mo, Kongo, Minakov, Volkov, MVP, Daley.

Top 15 Bellator current regime signings: Rory Mac, Mousasi, Bader, Fedor, Davis, Pico, Ruth, Budd, Nemkov, Kharitonov, Mitrione, Lovato jr, Gallenghar, Caldwell, Storley.

Which regime had the better signings?

    • combat sports fan

      I meant along with MMA.

We should prolly know about where Chandler signs with within a week. Also Minakov soon might finally return to Bellator.

I think Golden Boy MMA will be a one and done event. I hope not because the more competition the better.

Will the new ACB World app have their kickboxing and BJJ along with MMA? Not sure on this question. Will look into it

Which regime had the better signings? I would go with current regime of Bellator, but should note that Caldwell was signed by the previous regime.

Bellator MMA/ Paramount Network get with the fucking times. End tape delay now. It’s 2018 all sports events should be shown live. Do we have to get a petition going or what? I wonder if tape delay for Bellator will ever end. We might as well have to get a petition going for that to happen.

How likely is Chandler vs Alvarez 3 in Bellator now that he Chandler re signed with them?

Jones vs Gus 2 or Jones vs AJ main event at UFC 230? I rather see Jones vs AJ because we never seen that fight before. Hbu?

    • combat sports fan

now that Chandler re signed is what I meant. Now it’s your move Eddie. Go back to Bellator and complete arguably the greatest trilogy in MMA history and be lightweight champ again. Or be a gate keeper in UFC with maybe some big fights as well.

      • combat sports fan

I think UFC will re sign Eddie Alvarez because they don’t want him going back to Bellator. They don’t want to see Bellator do Chandler vs Alvarez 3.

    • Jason Floyd

How likely is Chandler vs Alvarez 3 in Bellator now that he Chandler re signed with them? I would say 50/50.

Jones vs Gus 2 or Jones vs AJ main event at UFC 230? I rather see Jones vs AJ because we never seen that fight before. Hbu? I spoke about Jon Jones and UFC 230 on this podcast.

Which fight would you like to main event UFC 230 out of these: Jones Gus 2? Jones vs AJ? Or GSP vs Askren?

When Cyborg’s contract is up in March. Does she re sign with UFC? Sign with Bellator while also doing boxing/ Rizin? Or sign with PFL entering 4 woman featherweight tournament featuring: Kayla Harrison, Sarah Kaufman, Aexis Dufrense and herself.

Which fight would you like to main event UFC 230 out of these: Jones Gus 2? Jones vs AJ? Or GSP vs Askren? I address the Jon Jones/UFC 230 discussion on this episode of the podcast. You can hear my thoughts on this topic on the podcast.

Or sign with PFL entering 4 woman featherweight tournament featuring: Kayla Harrison, Sarah Kaufman, Aexis Dufrense and herself. I would say UFC, based on they would likely pay her the most money/

The reason the last Bellator event had pacing issues is because the last several ended 30 or 40 minuets early. They wanted to fill up time because their fights are mostly finishes every card.

What are your thoughts about Patricio Pitbull’s comments on Chandler re signing with Bellator to avoid USADA? I think he’s trying to sell a future fight between them. Which now I am even more excited to see. Also Pitbull shouldn’t be talking about PED’s when he also avoided UFC for the same thing. Along with Bellator having far less competition compared to UFC.

    • Jason Floyd

I will be speaking about those comments on next week’s podcast. But I will say this now, Pitbull brothers have been very vocal about wanting more drug testing. I have heard things they have said to commissions about wanting more drug testing.

      • combat sports fan

Some of the fighters who said that later on failed drug tests. It’s happened before. They say it for people not to question them using. Instead they call out others.

      • Jason Floyd

I will talk more about this on a podcast, but Patricio has asked for VADA testing to be done in the past.

Ariel Helwani is reporting that Vitaly Minakov has re signed with Bellator. He is returning after a long contract dispute. But he was still under contract with them. They just let him fight in Russia all these years. I wanna see Minakov vs Mir in November. I hope they do that.

Now all Paramount MMA needs to do is end tape delay and everybody would be happy.

  6. combat sports fan

When Minakov first signed with Bellator I believe it was an 8 fight deal. So that would mean he would have three fights left. But in the press release it says he re signed. Is it 3 fights remaining plus another 3 making it a 6 fight deal?

    • Jason Floyd

There is a time factor in Bellator deals. It’s why you see them call it “multi-fight, multi-year contract.” This is a new contract.

  7. combat sports fan

Diego Sanchez, Gray Maynard, and Jake Ellenberger need to retire. It’s a damn shame Dana won’t talk them into retirement like he has others. But the other fighters he really cared about.

What do you think about Minakov vs Mir and Machida vs King Mo in November on Dazn? Do you think it will happen?

  8. combat sports fan

Have you ever asked your good friend Sam Caplan. If he ever thought about starting a new MMA league. With his former team Bjorn Rebney, Tim Danaher, Anthony Mazzuca, and zack light? Or have you ever try to talk him into starting one? MMA needs more competition and another big time promotion. Maybe if Golden Boy MMA’s first event is successful they’ll have many more events. But I think it’ll be one and done.

    • Jason Floyd

Sam did a local event in Philadelphia a couple of years ago. In terms of the names you mentioned, I would say it’s safe to say they have moved on from the MMA promoting business. To be a major player in the game, it takes ALOT of money.

What MMA and other podcasts do you listen to? Do you listen to your own podcasts?

    • Jason Floyd

Yes, I listen to my own podcasts. The only way to get better as a broadcaster is to listen to your performance and be honest with yourself. In terms of the podcasts I listen to, I own a digital media company and I listen to all of the podcasts that are part of my network. Outside of the shows produced by my company, the only MMA podcast that I constantly listen to is the Co-Main Event Podcast. Outside of MMA podcast, I mostly listen to sports podcasts.

Do you think Paramount Network will ever end tape delay for Bellator? Within a few months maybe?

How surprised were you that Bellator didn’t sign Shane Carwin? I can’t believe they low balled him. They pay a ton of money to all the other heavyweights. It’s a damn shame because it would’ve be really fun to watch him again. I still think he returns, maybe next year.

      • combat sports fan

Do you think one day they will start airing live events on Dazn and show tape delay the next day on Paramount Network?

Why weren’t you surprised on Shane Carwin? Is it because you think he wouldn’t show up like he did with Rizin?

      • Jason Floyd

Daniel and I have given our feelings about Bellator and Paramount/DAZN on the podcast.

On Carwin, just felt that Bellator had a price they were willing to pay for Carwin and were not going to over pay for his services.

  11. combat sports fan

Carwin said they offered him 40k to show 40k to win. Which is sad. I’m pretty sure if they offered him 100k per fight he’d be a Bellator fighter now.

Do you think Bobby Lashley returns to Bellator for like a one last retirement fight? Or is he pretty much retired already? I doubt he’d come back. Bobby lashley declined to be in the heavyweight grand prix. Also he declines all the big fights anyway. He has refused to fight Overeem years ago in Japan, Mitrione, Nelson, Kongo, Fedor. And plenty more he’s ducked. Bobby was never a Brock Lesnar. Very few people on this earth are like him. Brock has had the toughest MMA career ever. He will fight anybody.

Top 5 fighters with the toughest MMA careers IMO: Lesnar, Machida, Hunt, King Mo, and Pico. Who are your top 5?

    Top 10 MMA/ Boxing fights of 2018?

    • Jason Floyd

I will talk about Bobby Lashley on tomorrow’s podcast.

On top 5 toughest career paths, I would have to take some time to go thru MMA history to figure out my top 5. Of top of my head, Lesnar would definitely be in mine, but Pico would not.

Top 10 fights that I have happened in 2018 or top 10 that are scheduled for the remaining of the year?
