A report has surfaced early this morning via Brett Okamoto of ESPN, that Dana White has confirmed to him that Jon Jones (19-1) wants his next light heavyweight championship defense to be against Glover Teixeira (22-2) Super Bowl weekend.
“That’s what the champ wants,” White said. “We’ll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey.”
According to the same report, Gustafsson (15-2) will also get an opponent, but it won’t be until the UFC’s next stop in Sweden. No official date or opponent has been set for that card from the UFC as of yet.
It also remains to be seen if this Jones vs Teixeira fight will be on a PPV or a Fox event Super Bowl weekend. Eric Shanks, President of Fox Sports Media Group, stated back in November, “We think that Super Bowl week in New York is going to be like anything else. We’re gonna own the city, we’re going to own that week of sports television and there’s nothing better we can think of than a big fight that week.”
This report comes at a time when Jones has just been medically suspended for up to 60-days from the Ontario Athletic Commission. Thankfully for the champ though, he was released from the hospital shortly after his epic win over Gustafsson.
