Chael Sonnen received his punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission today for his recent failed drug tests as he received a two year suspension, can not take a fight during that time with another commission, and must reimburse the commission from the drug test cost.
The suspension was handed down by the commission during their monthly meeting today in Las Vegas.
Sonnen’s appearance lasted over one hour and stated that he was guilty as charged and was ashamed of testing positive for the banned substances.
During the testimony, Dr. Timothy Trainor explained the substances that Sonnen tested positive for and the effects of the substances. After hearing all of the testimony, the commissioners went into deliberation and discussed potential penalties.
At first, the commissioners discussed a suspension of one year, he could not take another fight in another regulatory body, and would need to reimburse the commission for the drug test cost. Commissioner Anthony Marnell III believed that a lifetime ban should be considered, but noted that he would agree on a penalty that his fellow commissioners felt was the correct punishment.
Commissioner Pat Lundvall would put a motion for a two year suspension, Sonnen would not be allowed to take a fight with any other commission in those two years, reimburse the commission for the drug tests cost, and work with the commission in a publicist role with fighters who test positive for banned substances.
The motion would be passed by the commission and following the decision, Sonnen went up to each member of the commission to shake their hands. The audio of Sonnen’s appearance today in from of the Nevada State Athletic Commission will be posted later today on TheMMAReport.com.
