Georges St-Pierre returned to the octagon for the first time in 19 months and defeated Carlos Condit by decision to become the unified UFC welterweight champion at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
St-Pierre was able to use his wrestling game to control the fight with Condit, but Condit did have his opportunity and that came in the third round.
He landed a head kick that dropped his opponent and he looked for the finish. He would not be able to finish off St-Pierre as he was able to recover and control the rest of the fight. Condit admitted in his post fight interview with Joe Rogan that he thought he had St-Pierre, but he couldn’t do enough to get the job done.
In the championship rounds, St-Pierre was able to get the fight to the ground, where Condit struggled to get off his back. When he was able to get off his back, St-Pierre would be able to take the fight back to the ground.
After the fight was completed, the judges scored the fight 49-46, 50-45 an 50-45 for St-Pierre. After the scores were read, St-Pierre was asked about the possibility of a fight with middleweight champion Anderson Silva and he would not commit to a fight with him.
If Silva is not next, he may end up facing Johny Hendricks, who scored the knockout of the night when he defeated Martin Kampmann in 46 seconds. He landed a two punch combination that knocked out his opponent and he would like his next fight to be for the title.
