Bellator 83 was scheduled to be headlined by the featherweight tournament final between Shahbulat Shamhalaev and Rad Martinez, but the fight was canceled by the commission after Shamhalaev came down with food poisoning.
Upon announcing that the fight was canceled, Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced that the fight has been rescheduled for next week at Bellator 84 in Hammond, Indiana.
Bellator cameras showed the reaction of both fighters as they were told that the fight would not take place tonight in Atlantic City.
With the fight being moved to next week, Bellator 84 will now see the finals in this seasons heavyweight, lightweight and featherweight tournaments.
There were two fights that did take place on the main card of Bellator 84 and Anthony Leone pulled off an upset as he defeated Zach Makovsky by split decision. Two of the three judges scoring the fight scored it for Leone as they gave him two of the three rounds.
Makovsky attempted to use his striking to set up his takedowns, but he struggled early in the fight to take the fight to the ground. Both fighters had there opportunities with submissions with both guys coming close to the finish. Leone secured the fight by controlling the third round with his ground game. He was in top position for most of the round and Makovsky was unable to get off his back.
In the opening fight of the main card, Jessica Eye only needed 58 seconds to defeat Zoila Gurgel in a women’s flyweight bout. Eye landed a right hand that dropped Gurgel early in the fight, but Gurgel would work her way to her feet. The would grapple and Eye was able to lock in an arm triangle choke and Gurgel went to sleep and Eye won by technical submission.
