A light heavyweight bout that has been rumored for several weeks is now offical for UFC 159 on April 27th when Phil Davis meets Vinny Magalhaes.
UFC officials announced the fight booking on Tuesday evening and the fight will take place on the main card, which will take place on pay-per-view.
Davis (10-1, 1NC) is one of the top light heavyweights in the UFC and has gone 6-1, 1NC in the UFC. He won his first five fights in the UFC before facing former champion Rashad Evans last year. The fight was a number one contenders bout and he was defeated by decision.
He returned at UFC on FOX 4 against Wagner Prado, who was making his UFC debut. The fight would end in the first round when he accidentally poked Prado in the eye and he would not be able to continue. The fight would be declared a no contest and they would have their rematch at UFC 153. In the rematch, Davis would overwhelm Prado and win by submission in the second round.
Magalhaes (10-5, 1NC) was a finalist during “The Ultimate Fighter 8” and lost to Ryan Bader in the final. After being defeated in his next fight, he was released by the UFC and would win seven of his next eight fights before being coming back to the UFC.
His return to the organization came at UFC 152 against Igor Pokrajac and won by submission in the second round. It was his eighth career win by submission and four of his last six wins have come by submission.
UFC 159 takes place on April 27th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and will be headlined by Jon Jones defending the UFC light heavyweight title against Chael Sonnen.
