In a battle of former UFC fighters making their Bellator debut, Vladimir Matysuhenko defeated Houston Alexander by unanimous decision on the main card of Bellator 99 on Friday night.
The action would open up with a feeling out process for the opening minute before Matyushenko threw a leg kick followed up by a right hand. Alexander ended up surprising most people by taking the fight to the ground but Matyushenko would get back to his feet.
Later in the round, Matyushenko used a throw to get the fight to the ground and ended up passing to the mount position. Alexander would give up his back and was able to get back to his feet with less than a minute to go in the round. They would exchange punches until the round ended and the fight moved into the second round.
The second round would be on the feet for the entire round with neither fighter being very active. Alexander would have a 11-10 advantage in the round in total strikes but Matyushenko landed the more significant strikes in the round.
In the final round, Matyushenko was able to get the fight to the ground at the two minute mark of the round. While on the ground, Matyushenko landed multiple strikes as Alexander worked his way back to his feet. Matyushenko continues to hold onto him and once again took the fight to the ground. He was able to keep the fight on the ground for the rest of the ground and dominated the action.
The fight went to the judges scorecards were all three judges scored the fight for Matyushenko (27-7) and this is his first win since his knockout victory over Jason Brilz at UFC 129 in 2011.
