Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante won the vacant Titan FC lightweight title last month at Titan FC 39 with a knockout victory against Pat Healy in the opening round and he will make his first title defense next month at Titan FC 40 against Freddy Assuncao.
The week of his fight against Healy was not the ideal week for Cavalcante. During this past Wednesday’s edition of “The MMA Report Podcast,” Cavalcante admitted that there were concerns whether he would be able to compete on fight night after suffering an injury one week out from the fight and getting sick three days before the weigh-ins.
“A week before the fight was a tough week for me,” Cavalcante explained. “In my last training, I got hurt. Two days later, I got sick. I got like a cold and flu. Three days before the weigh-ins, I was bad. But there is always a good side on the negative side. My weight dropped pretty easy. It was a good weight cut. I was ready. I knew my camp was good. All my coached — the Blackzilians have amazing coaches and amazing training partners so I was ready. Just like the last couple of days before the fight was really tough for me, but my wife helped me out a lot. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I would have fight. She was taking care of me really well. Doing all kind of things. Everything worked well. Day of the weigh-ins, I was feeling good and on the fight day, I was more than ready. It was good to see everything come together.”
