Chael Sonnen was willing to step in on less than two weeks notice to take on Jon Jones, but the champion was unwilling to take the fight.
Jones will now be facing Vitor Belfort at UFC 152 on September 22nd and Sonnen will be ready to step in for Belfort if he has to pull out of the fight.
Sonnen appeared on the radio show Max and Marcellus on ESPN LA 710 am and said he is currently scheduled to take on Forrest Griffin and he will be ready to replace Belfort if needed.
“I’ve got an agreement to fight a gentleman named Forrest Griffin on December 29th but I don’t know,” Sonnen said. “Jon Jones has a date on September 22nd and right now he’s fighting Vitor Belfort. Vitor never shows up, Vitor has pulled out of way more fights than he has ever shown up for so if I had to guess you’ll be seeing me fight Jon Jones on September 22nd.”
Belfort is excited for the opportunity he current has, but it sounds like Sonnen will be ready if the UFC calls him. At this point, it’s not a question of if Jones and Sonnen will face, it’s a question of when.
