Derek Anderson moving up to welterweight to meet Paul Daley at Bellator 163

Derek Anderson will be moving up to the welterweight division next month at Bellator 163 as he will meet Paul Daley on the main card broadcast on Spike.

The fight booking was announced by Bellator in a press release on Monday and the promotion also announced that Sergei Kharitonov will make his promotional debut against Javy Ayala in a heavyweight bout.

Bellator 163 will come from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on November 4 and will be headlined by a title fight as Liam McGeary defends the Bellator light heavyweight title against Phil Davis.

Daley (38-14-2) is coming off a decision defeat against former Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima in July at Bellator 158. The defeat snapped a five fight winning streak and he is 9-2 in his last eleven fights. Anderson (14-2, 1NC) has won back to back fights and is coming off a decision win against Saad Awad in August. He is 5-2 in Bellator and he explained on his Instagram page why he is moving up to fight Daley at Bellator 163.

Moving up a weight class to stay busy while I wait for someone at the top my size. 5 weeks out. Feeling strong. Can’t wait to be back in the cage. November 4th at the Mohegan sun casino in Connecticut against tough opponent Paul Daley with over 50 fights.

  1. To me, this is very disappointing. This card is going to have to lightweights, Saad Awaad and Derek Anderson, moving up to fight two welterweights, Brennan Ward and Paul Daley. What is wrong with having Derek Anderson vs Josh Thomson in a lightweight fight that would have an affect on the lightweight division and title challenger picture, or have Derek Anderson vs Brent Primus, to avenge that highly questionable victory for Brent Primus. And what would be wrong with having Paul Daley vs Chidi Njokuani, which would have a real bearing on the welterweight title challenger picture. I do think the fights are good on this card, I just question not putting together fights for Paul Daley and Derek Anderson, with opponents from their own weight division which would have a impact on their division. And Javy Ayala gets first shot at Sergei Kharitonov in the Bellator cage. Lets go Javy Ayala (lol). That guy is a Bellator mainstay.

    1. On Josh Thomson, he is planning to return in February so I doubt Anderson wanted to sit around and wait for that fight.

      1. Cool to know about the Josh Thomson news and his planned returned. That knockout of him by Aaron Pico must have been pretty devastating for Josh Thomson to be sitting out so long. I understand concussion protocol and being careful with that, and that is always a good thing. But I wonder if another type of injury took place as well. Anyway, keep up the great work for us MMA fans Jason Floyd.

        1. On next week’s podcast, I have an interview with Ryan Couture and he talked about concussions. He was very candid about what he went through from Patricky defeat.

  2. That College football game ended before the UFC main card started.

    What do you think of Daley vs Anderson and Kharitonov vs Ayala? I find the Daley vs Anderson an odd matchup. I rather have seen Daley vs Honeycutt and Kharitonov vs Mitrione.

    I think UFC 205 is better on paper than UFC 100 and 200. Am I crazy for thinking that?

    You think this is the yr the Magic finally make the playoffs again?

    WSOF 33 on paper is their best event of the yr. And should have their highest ratings on NBCSN. But I doubt it will be.

    1. The college game ended during the UFC Fight Night 96 main card. I know this because I was flipping back and fourth between UFC card and the college game (AKA, no college game in primetime is ending in 3 hours, game ended at 12:06a ET).

      1. Ya, the College football game ended few mins after the main card started. So it really didn’t affect the UFC main card ratings at all.

        1. The college game on ABC ended at 12:06a ET, the main card started at 11p ET and ended sometime after 1a ET. The UFC main card went up against the college game for 66 minutes.

  3. What do you think of Dana saying McGregor has to give up one of his titles after the Alvarez fight? Dana is already crowning him featherweight and Lightweight champ. Obviously they really want and think he will win.

  4. I was watching SC and they showed a highlight of Eddie Alvarez vs Michael Chandler. Did they get permission from Bellator to do that?

        Btw Josh Samman’s cause of death was a drug overdoes. I think the drug was Heroine. Even though his mom denies it.
