Ratings Report: Bellator 161 averages 686,000 viewers in preliminary ratings

Bellator 161 took place on Friday night from the HEB Center in Cedar Park, Texas and was headlined by Cheick Kongo winning his third straight fight with a majority decision win over Tony Johnson in a heavyweight bout.

According to Nielson sources, Bellator 161’s preliminary average viewership landed at 686,000 viewers and the average viewership for Bellator in 2016 in the preliminary ratings is 736,000.

When it came to the sports competition on cable, the Bellator fight card went up against a college football game on ESPN that drew an average audience of 1.454 million viewers.

The preliminary viewership ratings for Bellator in 2016 are below and the +3 DVR ratings for this fight card will be available later this week.

  1. This is about the average of Bellator’s audience. Not good, not bad, just the same ole same. At some point in time, Scott Coker and his staff is going to have to give the young guns a chance to headline a Main Event. Seriously, Bellator needs to find out what ratings would a Michael Chandler headlined card would bring. Bellator needs to find out what ratings a Michael Venom Page headlined card would bring. And even though he is not a young gun, Bellator seriously needs to find out what ratings would a Bobby Lashley headlined card would bring in. Yeah, it’s nice to sign these ex UFC fighters and have them headline a Main Event, but under Scott Coker, he and his staff are totally ignoring the elephant in the room, by not trying to use a established Bellator fighter like Michael Chandler, or Michael Venom Page, or Bobby Lashley headline a Main Event. I am not saying do not use the ex UFC fighters to headline Main Events, but don’t forget about having the well known established Bellator fighters headline their Main Events as well.

    1. Michael Chandler has headlined some Bellator events before. And he is gonna against Bendo November 19th. Chandler, MVP, and Lashley are all draws for them.

      Caldwell and Koreshkov have main evented and will in the future as well.

      I think it was a really bad decision to have Kongo vs Johnson the main event. They should have had it on a tent pole being like the 2nd fight on the main card. Or not have it at all.

  2. Ridiculous, Cheick Kongo always draws around 900,000 to 1 ,million viewers for his fights in Bellator. And at some point, Bellator needed to keep the heavyweight division moving forward towards crowning a champion. What Bellator event has Michael Chandler Main Evented in the Scott Coker era of Bellator? Not co Main Evented but was the Main Event in the Scott Coker era? So Bellator needs to reward the Bellator fan base by having the established Bellator stars Main Event their cards, NOT JUST ONCE, but multiple times. It’s called BELLATOR, not HOME OF THE EX-UFC FIGHTERS MMA. So have Bobby Lashley be in the Main Event against Sergei Kharitonov or Matt Mitrione, have Michael Chandler in the Main Event against a Derek Anderson, or Josh Thomson, have Michael Venom Page in the Main Event against a Paul Daley, or Chidi Njokuani. And so what if they lose, it’s sports, people lose. I watch the CFL and it has built itself on creating their own stars and not just NFL cast offs. And yes, Andrey Koreshkov Main Evented two cards that I have seen under the Scott Coker regime, against Douglas Lima, a established Bellator fighter and against Benson Henderson, a ex-WEC, ex-UFC established fighter. What I am saying Hardcore MMA Fan that you are not getting, Bellator needs to continue to have their established Bellator fighters Main Event their cards and plug in the ex-UFC fighters in here and there to Main Event their cards. There are enough fight cards in a year to do both.

    1. Cheick Kongo has proven to be a ratings generator for Bellator. At this time, I have not been able to confirm whether or not the peak came during the main event. What I have been told is that the Yankova fight did very well in the ratings.

  3. Since Scott Coker took over Bellator, 17 main events with UFC guys headlining their events. And 30 Bellator guys headlining their events. I’m also counting future events.

    Some of the UFC guys they have, fought for Bellator before they fought in UFC. Some of them even Bellator doesn’t know fought for them.

    Plus the UFC guys who headline their events have gotten Bellator their highest attendances, gates, and ratings.

  4. Most of the main events UFC guys headlined aren’t UFC vs UFC fighters. They are Bellator vs UFC. Which is kinda like in the UFC you see Strikeforce vs UFC match ups. What’s wrong with that? They do showcase their home grown fighters in their main events. And they’ll continue to do a mixture of their own and UFC guys.
